Library Policies and Practices

• The library will be open at all times.
• All library materials (books, cassette tapes, etc) may be checked out for a period of thirty days by church members and members of their families.
• Should library material not be returned within the thirty-day period, a librarian will contact the borrower and request its return. The borrower will be asked to pay for the item should it be damaged or lost.
• No library material should be taken from the library unless it has been checked out. Library material may be checked out by removing the library card from its pocket, signing and dating it, and dropping it in the slot of the circulation counter.
• Library material may be returned by dropping it in the same slot.
• Sunday school classes are encouraged to visit and use the library.

Library Selection Policy

For materials secured for the church library to be of high quality and of benefit to members, these selection guidelines will be followed.

1. The concept of stewardship should be applied to the purchase and care of all materials since the library is supported by the church, and is directly involved in the mission of the church.
2. Additional materials, purchased or donated, will be approved by the librarian and the Director of Christian Education. Gifts must meet the same standards as purchased items.
3. All materials should be of high literary and technical quality; also, they must meet high moral standards and be appropriate for inclusion in the church library. It must be noted that the purpose of a church library is markedly different from that of a public or school library.
4. Periodically, material should be reviewed and those which are out-of-date or of no value should be given away to church members or discarded.
5. It is intended that library materials meet the needs of the FUMC-Orange and those of its members who wish to read and study volumes in Biblical literature, Christian and United Methodist beliefs, church history, devotional material, missions and on other religious topics. Sunday school teachers and other leaders should especially find – library resources to be of great value.
6. General knowledge materials such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, reference materials and volumes on such topics as nature, history, government and personal development will constitute an important part of the library.
7. Works of fiction and poetry will also be included in the library and they will be approved on the basis of literary merit and appropriateness.
8. Materials for pre-school, primary and intermediate – aged children will be selected on the basis of literary merit, appropriateness, and addressing developmental needs.

We have a collection of Christian-based reading materials, audio-visual materials such as DVD movies, music CDs, and audiotapes. Come by and check out what we have.

Wanna find out what could have happened in another small southern town? Check out "Joshua", a DVD movie found in the FUMC Library. "Joshua" is loosely based on Joshua -- a fiction book by Joseph Girzone -- featuring Tony Goldwyn as Joshua, and directed by Jon Purdy. (The Resource Center also has the book, available for checkout.)
