Church Committee Job Descriptions
(abbreviated)
Acolyte – Trains and teaches each acolyte and recruits new participants.
Altar Guild – Membership is open to all women members of the church. Participants are trained in the duties and then rotate the duties of care of the altar and its furnishings. This can be done during the week after checking to see that nothing is scheduled in the chapel or sanctuary.
Bereavement – Strives to surround the grieving family of this church with God’s love through prayers, support, cards, and a funeral meal according to the wishes of the family.
Building and Grounds – Maintain the church facilities in a manner that prevents deterioration, assures an attractive appearance and adheres to applicable standards of safety.
Caring Ministry – Maintains contact with members of our congregation unable to attend worship services providing a link with their medical and personal situation through visits, telephone calls, and mail.
Chairperson of church Council – elected by the Charge Conference annually and has responsibilities as established in the BOOK OF DISCIPLINE.
Church Recording Secretary – elected by the Charge Conference to record and maintain official minutes of the charge Conference and Church Council meetings.
Communications and Publicity – assists the local church, its members, and committees with communication tasks by communicating with the members, committees and church body and with the media when appropriate.
Coordinators – works with the various ministries for which he/she is responsible to assist, advise, and ensure that the various tasks of the ministry are implemented with the responsibility for any action done by the chairperson.
Discipleship Ministry – plans, coordinates and publicizes the Wednesday Night Live programs of the church and recruits members who will prepare and serve the meals.
Education - largest committee in the church. Responsible for the educational programming of all children, youth, adult, and family areas.
Evangelism – responsible for spreading the good news of Jesus Christ both inside and outside the church. The focus is to develop an atmosphere that reaches out and empowers our members to invite others to join us in a profession of faith and living a Christian lifestyle.
Family Life – sponsors and supports study and social opportunities that provide families of any configuration or size to develop a Christ -centered family.
Finance – all financial needs to be included in the annual budget of the local church shall be submitted to this committee. This committee is responsible for compiling an annual budget for the church and submit it to the Church Council for adoption. This committee is responsible for raising sufficient income to meet the budget. This is one of four committees required by the BOOK OF DISCIPLINE.
Greeters – various members are scheduled to greet those attending worship services and to extend the fellowship of our church to members and visitors by introducing them to others attending worship.They may serve as communion stewards and be available to assist others by answering questions regarding the church and its facilities.
Joys and concern e-mail – sends requests for prayers of need and of thanksgiving to members who want to be included on in this ministry.
Kitchen – works with staff members to inspect and maintain the kitchens and equipment and recommend necessary repairs and/or replacements as needed.
Laity Enrichment – encourages laity and staff to enthusiastically develop and execute programs and functions that will augment and/or improve the existing programs and create new ones to better serve the congregation.
Lay Delegate – elected annually by the Charge Conference to represent the church for two years at Annual Conference to interpret the actions of Annual conference sessions to the church membership.
Lay Leader – elected at Charge Conference as the primary lay representative of the laity of the local church with duties set out in the BOOK OF DISCIPLINE.
Lay Leadership – duties and structure of this committee are defined in the BOOK OF DISCIPLINE. Members are elected by nomination from the floor during the Charge Conference.
Librarian - maintains library excellence through adhering to the standards and practices of library management including budgeting, purchasing, processing, and managing the resources and materials. Works closely with the Education Committee.
Malloy – works with church staff to publicize, promote, and increase public awareness and use of the Malloy Center. Oversees the maintenance and cleaning of the Center and its furnishings.
Memorial – receives the money that is given as memorials or honorariums and administers the funds as set out in established guidelines of the church.
Mission – this ministry is to make a Christian difference in the lives of others within and without our community by ministering to their needs. They keep the church members informed of opportunities to serve and coordinate these programs.
Music and Fine Arts – Chancel Choir, Handbell Choir, Youth Choir, Keenager Koir, Wesley Players, and Family Productions which includes both children and adults.
Nursery – works closely with nursery staff to maintain a clean, pleasant, and appealing facility for infants through three years of age.
Parsonages – oversees the maintenance and upkeep of the two parsonages.
Staff-parish Relations – one of four committees required by the BOOK OF DISCIPLINE with duties and responsibilities outlined there. This committee oversees the church personnel matters.
Stewardship – an extension of the Finance Committee to encourage pledging by church members of their time, talents and financial resources.
Transportation – assures that the church vehicles are mechanically sound
Trustees – have supervision, oversight, and care of all real property owned by the church and of all property and equipment acquired directly by the church. Trustees have a fiduciary responsibility for proper use and management of grants or other monetary means. They report to the Church Council on a regular basis and are responsible to the Charge Conference. One of four committees required by the BOOK OF DISCIPLINE.
United Methodist Men – strives to provide a dedicated Christian ministry for the development of men as leaders in the local church and community.
United Methodist Women – establish and foster mission work within the local church. All women members of the church are by definition members.
Usher – dedicated volunteers who give of their time to assist in various worship services of the church by seating members and guests, distributing bulletins, collecting the offering, and assisting those with special needs. Their responsibilities are important to the orderly and meaningful worship service.
WEB page coordinator – creates and maintains an up-to-date web page of all church information, news, and activities.
Worship – promotes the spiritual life of the congregation through the worship services. Works closely with the ministers and director of music to assure that services provide the means of grace to those in attendance at each of the various services throughout the year.
